Online Advice from Guy Thomas - Plan B

Advice and Problem Solving Plan B

I really am not looking for work.  However, I feel a responsibility to provide a reply service especially to those who buy my ebooks.  I also want to help those who visit my site.   Here is what I offer, no charge for a 'quick question'.  Thereafter, I ask you to pay me $25 for any further response.  If it's a major project, then we can discuss a further fee.

Remember, there is always
Plan A advice to help you solve the problem yourself.

Plan B - Why do I charge for Individual Advice?

It's only human nature that I will strive harder to answer your question if you make a payment.  When I am dealing with people who expect me to fix their problem for free, I human, and I always seem irritated and in a rush.

If you pay for advice then you are more likely to listen to what I say!

I need some way to stop being snowed under with emails.  Plan B is one way of filtering the important and urgent problems.

Areas where I have expertise:

Areas of limited knowledge

  • Logon Scripts
  • VBScripts
  • CSVDE
  • Windows 2003 Group Policies
  • Exchange Configuration
  • Migration - Windows Server 2003 and Exchange 2003
  • Hardware
  • Routers
  • Wireless

Contacting me.

Include the precise problem.  Be concise, but include details which are obvious to you, but I need to solve the problem.

Bad - Insufficient

Bad - Too much irrelevant detail

I want to create a VBScript which lists all XP machines in my domain.

I want to know all machines.

I want to know all about every Microsoft Windows XP Dell PowerEdge on my network.  Most are blue and I got them from Dixons.  One is Red and I got that from ebay.

The problem with my Windows 2003 Group Policy is that the Machine based policies work, but the user based policies do not apply.

My Group Policy is not working.

I created a new group policy on my domain called xyz.  My domain controllers are called Alpha, Beta, Gama, delta, omega, theta and hex.  A user called Jennifer Johnson, she's - a temp, logged on to her XP machine and did not get her desktop.  When Jennifer logged onto Eddie's machine, Eddies our new Financial Director, she still did not get her desktop.

In my test network, I cannot Migrate users from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange Server 2003.

My migration failed.

We have been on Exchange 5.5 since Ivor was in charge, and he left 2 years ago.  I bought a new server from Dell, the salesman gave me a really good deal.  Then I installed Windows 2003, then I installed spyware, next I installed Veritas backup.  When I tried to install Exchange 2003 it installed brilliantly, I could see all the folders all the binary.  Then when I tried to migrate the Exchange 5.5 mailboxes I got an error message.
